The Perfect Gift for Junk Lovers

Good morning friends! This morning on #coffeetalk with Brooke & Hilary we chatted all about thrifting, turn over rate of resellers, popularity of pyrex, and shipping! We literally just let you in on our unscripted conversation!

Hilary and I both have lists of our favorite thrift shops in Des Moines and they are both COMPLETELY different lists! I have actually changed mine a few times because some of my favorites closed shop, while others completely rearranged, and others just seem to have changed their inventory, or I guess those that donate to them did!

HERE is my latest list if you want to grab it!

Hilary has taken me to her favorite thrift shops and explained why she likes the ones she does. One of her big things is cleanliness. She says it’s because you want clean places, but I think she likes to look at clean things too! Meanwhile I’m used to digging in basements, barns, and vacant buildings, so every thrift shop seems clean to me!

I also tend to look for antiques or vintage items to resell. So I want to visit places that have that stuff donated more often. Hilary has a wider scope of what she sells. But, we both agree that price and location are very important. I’m driving up from the south, so I hit up south side shops more frequently, while she is on the north side of town. And I think we can all agree that thrift store prices just keep going up!

We also talked about how everyone seems to dabble in reselling at one time or another! While it is a job that takes A LOT of work, there are also a lot of possibilities with reselling. If you are willing to work hard, you can make money. But, because it is hard, I find there is a big turn over!

I mean you can even take myself as an example. While I’ve been reselling for years, I keep changing how I resell. I started in booths and setting up at shows. I quickly realized how hard that is on your body and how little control you have when you are selling for someone else.

Then, I opened the shop and realized that even though I was now in total control, there were still aspects I wanted to change. Now selling predominately online, I have hired help to do the tasks I don’t enjoy as much! One of those is packing orders! Shipping is one reason Hilary does not sell online and I don’t think she is alone in that!

Shipping can take a lot of work and be very stressful because you don’t want items to get damaged. And dealing with shipping companies when items are damaged is a nightmare. I do talk about some improvements shipping companies are making and I do have a mini class, all about shipping and the apps I use. You can learn about that HERE.

The bummer about shipping antiques is that there isn’t a replacement to turn around and ship to the customer! And if Hilary was shipping some of her valuable Pyrex and it got damaged…well there would be a lot of tears and maybe some cussing!

So, hit play and listen in!

Have a great week my friends!
