Every year I say that I am not big on seasonal decor. However, I do enjoy decorating my front porch for fall and a few key areas in my home. Of course I can not do any decorating without incorporating vintage pieces! And this year my goal is to decorate for fall using things I already have! Let me show you how I am decorating with vintage for my fall front porch!
Decorating My Vintage Trucks
Now before we moved, I lived on a gravel road with a huge yard and porch! Sharing the driveway with us was my brick and mortar. What does that mean, that means that I did a lot of decorating outside for the seasons. I really tried to focus in on a few spots to save myself time and money.
Two of those spots included 2 old vintage trucks! Now, I think a lot of people on social media thought I had one truck that I constantly changed up. But it was actually two different trucks that I would style completely differently 3 times a year. Spring and summer often had the same look!

Decorating two old trucks, especially with one of them having an extended bed, could get expensive. So as the years of decorating went by I started to pick up old FAUX pumpkins! I might see one at a flea market, the thrift store, or a garage sale and I would just start buying them if they were cheap! At this point, I didn’t really care if they were “realistic” or what color they were.
I am in the repurposing and DIY business, so I know that EVERYTHING can be painted!!
Because decorating can get expensive when you are buying mums, potato vines, pumpkins, flowers, greenery, etc. every season that you can only use for one season! I decided to start incorporating faux to save myself some money.

The Downside to Faux
Now buying fake isn’t completely without problems. I mentioned that all of your pumpkins might not match or coordinate to one another. To me, this is an easy fix. Like I said, paint can fix a lot of issues. But also, when you have a couple of multiple styles they all start looking good together because there is repetition in the pumpkin color and/or pumpkin variety, it just seems to work.
So, it can take a little time to find multiple faux ones that look eclectic versus junky!
Another issue can be the wind. Typically faux pumpkins are light weight. So if there is a breeze, you might loose some! So, what are some options? Well, what I like to do is in corporate my vintage containers! That way I can decorate with vintage AND help prevent my little pumpkins from disappearing down the road. It’s a win win!
You can also use stakes to hold down your pumpkins. Maybe you put pumpkins in the yard, along flower beds, in pots, on top of straw, etc. There are lots of surfaces that will allow staking.
And possibly the biggest issue is simply storage. I have a couple plastic totes that I just throw the pumpkins in and then put those totes up high in the garage, so that they are out of the way! Pumpkins can be a decent size, but I’d rather have the inconvenience of storage and save myself a couple hundred bucks each year!
The Upside to Faux
Speaking of money, it really is one of the best reasons to go faux! If you are patient you can find large faux pumpkins for a couple bucks. The key is to be patient! But then it gives you something to hunt for that you NEED when you thrift and shop estate sales!
If you don’t have much patience you can still find inexpensive ones brand new. Remember, this is something that you can use for forever, so even if you spend more than you would on a real pumpkin, remember it lasts!! Here are a few of my favorites!
The other upside to buying faux pumpkins is that the reproductions just keep getting better and better!! I mean they even make carvable pumpkins!! I mean who would have imagined that would become a thing!! Not only do they look real, but they also make all different varieties depending on the style you like!
Zero Maintenance
Zero maintenance is also something I love! No rotting pumpkins that fall apart when you try to move them! No bugs!
But what I’m most excited about is that they even have faux mums!! Now I haven’t purchased any yet, but these are on my radar!
