Dining Room Decorating Ideas

I am slowly making some progress in making our house a home! After being in this house a little over 2 years I am now trying to go room by room and “finish” some areas! One of the spaces I have been working on is my dining room. So, today I am sharing some dining room decorating ideas!

The above picture shows the space to the right of our sliding glass doors. The sliding glass doors are in our dining room. Now our house is one long bowling alley with the dining room situated between the living room and kitchen. Opposite of the sliding glass doors are open stairs leading to the basement. Because of this stairway our dining area is very narrow. More narrow that the living room or kitchen.

What does a narrow dining room mean? It means there isn’t room for much beyond a table and chairs. In our dining room I opted for a round table that I brought with us in the move. It desperately needs sanded and resealed, but that will be a project for another day. I wanted to use a round table because everything else in this open floor plan has straight angles. Breaking up the straight angles with something round looks good to the eye.

I paired the round table with some new chairs I purchased after we had lived here a few months. Facebook Marketplace to the rescue. These chairs are not exactly what I had in mind, but I liked the shape, style and most importantly the color. As you look around my house you will notice that I have intentionally mixed a lot of wood tones.

I love neutral decor, but I think the key to decorating with neutrals is to have different tones and textures.

Watch Me Decorate

In THIS video you will see some of the changes I have made to the dining area. If you’ve been here for long, then you know I am always moving things around. I think it takes time to figure out what is right for you, your family, and how you use the space. You can only learn those things by living in your home. As time goes by you can make adjustments to what works for your household!

In the video above I “refreshed” the space to the right of the sliding glass doors and hung a new mirror above the stairway leading to the basement. But, since then I have done even more to complete the space. The dining room is definitely a room I will continue to work on. While I am happy with what it looks like there are still a few areas that just don’t feel perfect…yet!!

But that is the fun part about thrifting and hunting for antiques!! As you find new pieces you love you figure out to incorporate them into your home! And at some point those new pieces are going to feel like the “perfect fit.”
