1. Use Books as Decor

Books aren’t just for reading; they can be beautiful decorations too! Whether you have antique books or modern ones, their graphics and colors can add personality to your holiday setup. Decorating with red and green? Choose books in those colors to complement your theme. For a more unique vibe, like pink and gold, stack books in matching hues for a pop of color.

Want an even more festive touch? Wrap your existing books in holiday-themed wrapping paper. It’s a simple and inexpensive way to incorporate your color scheme into your Christmas decor.

2. Mix Old and New

There’s something special about blending vintage treasures with modern decor. Family heirlooms, antique books, and one-of-a-kind ornaments can bring nostalgia to your holiday setup. Old things are typically unique and one of a kind which differentiates your home from everyone else!!

In my own home I have used my grandma’s cookie cutters, tucking them into my kitchen window sill decor! She also owned a lot of old advertising pieces that I tuck into my existing vignettes to add a pop of color and holiday touch!

Growing up I had a crazy quilt stocking. It has recently become a mission to find more crazy quilt stockings to coordinate with it. So far, that has proved to be a difficult task, but I’m going to continue working towards it!

The beauty of mixing old and new is that it adds character and makes your decorations truly stand out. Even if you don’t own a lot of antiques, adding a few classic pieces can make your space feel timeless, unique, & special!!

3. Keep It Personal

In a world of Pinterest-perfect trees, it’s easy to lose sight of what makes Christmas special: memories. Decorate your tree with ornaments that tell your story. Hang handmade ornaments your kids created over the years, ones you’ve collected on vacations, or those gifted by loved ones.

Each ornament becomes a memory, and revisiting them each year will make decorating the tree even more meaningful.

4. Get Creative with Ornaments

Ornaments aren’t just for the tree! They can brighten up every corner of your home. Here are some ideas:

  • Hang ornaments from your mantel or windows like garland.
  • Place small bulbs in candleholders for a unique pop of color.
  • Decorate your chandelier by tying ornaments to the arms for an elegant touch.
  • Simply set them around your displays. You can use rings like THIS or poster putty to hold them in place.

These simple tricks allow you to incorporate ornaments throughout your home, making every space feel festive.

5. Use Greenery

Greenery is a versatile element in holiday decorating that can stay up long after Christmas. Faux greens are especially handy because they last year after year without the mess of sap or needles. Use greenery to:

  • Frame doorways or windows
  • Create a centerpiece for your dining table
  • Adorn your mantel or staircase
  • Fill containers

Keeping greenery up through winter helps bridge the gap between Christmas and spring, so your home doesn’t feel bare after the holidays.

6. Light It Up

There’s nothing quite like the warm glow of Christmas lights to lift your spirits. From string lights to battery-operated candles, modern lighting options make it easy to create a cozy atmosphere. Consider:

  • Keeping your Christmas tree lights on a timer so it’s always glowing when you get home.
  • Adding traditional window candles for an old-fashioned touch.
  • Using fairy lights to highlight shelves, wreaths, or table settings.

The soft twinkle of lights makes everything feel magical, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different placements.

Final Thoughts

Decorating for Christmas doesn’t have to be complicated. By using what you have, adding personal touches, and sprinkling in some creativity, you can create a home that’s festive and inviting. Remember, the best decorations are the ones that make you smile and bring joy to your family and friends. So grab your favorite ornaments, some greenery, and a few books, and let the holiday magic begin!
