Graduation Gift Ideas That Go Beyond Cash

Every year someone you know graduates! My mom was a teacher, I taught for years, and my husband is in education. Being in education typically means we get a lot of graduation invites! And this year, we have one graduating from college and one graduating from high school!

So in addition to planning graduation parties this year, I thought I’d take the time to share some gift ideas for graduates! During a recent Coffee Talk with Brooke and Hilary, someone asked for suggestions—something other than money.

Reflecting on My Own Graduation Gifts

I reflected back on some of my most memorable graduation gifts. Even though it’s been 30 years (how?!), I still remember the things that made an impact. Many were the ones that covered basic needs and those are often the most practical, thoughtful, and actually used gifts.

Of course, there are also plenty of things that are fun and trending, especially now with all the cool dorm tech and aesthetic must-haves.

Things to Consider Before You Shop

Before you hit “add to cart,” here are a few things to keep in mind that can help you choose the right gift:

  • Dorm Rules: Some dorms don’t allow appliances like air fryers or hot plates. They are awesome gifts—but check first!
  • Bathroom Setup: Do they have their own bathroom, or are they trekking down the hallway to a shared one? That changes what kind of shower caddy or robe might work best.

Everyday Essentials Make Great Gifts

Let’s be honest: most new grads are on a budget and figuring life out! Gifts that support those everyday needs are always appreciated. Think about:

Shop the Guides

I’ve created a few gift guides to help you find the perfect graduation gift. Whether you’re shopping for a high school grad heading to college, a college grad launching into the real world, or just someone you want to celebrate with something special—you’ll find ideas that are useful, trendy, and thoughtful.

Final Thoughts

Graduation is such an exciting time—and it’s more than just the ceremony. It’s a big life transition! Whether you go practical, sentimental, or a little bit of both, your gift can help a grad feel celebrated and supported.

And remember, it doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful. A handwritten note, a small care package, or something you’ve found helpful in your own life can mean the world to someone starting a new chapter. In THIS post I shared a simple DIY gift!!
