How to Plan a Room Makeover Step by Step

Are you ready to transform a room in your home? A room makeover can be exciting and rewarding! Whether you want to refresh your bedroom, living room, or any other space, following these steps will help you create a beautiful new environment. Let’s dive into how to plan your room makeover step by step!

Step 1: Have a Plan

Before diving into any makeover, it’s essential to have some kind of plan. Start by considering the following:

  • Color Scheme: Think about the colors you love and how they work together. What colors do you have in other parts of your home?
  • Furniture Arrangement: Visualize how you want the furniture to be arranged. How will you use the space?  I often like to live in a space for awhile to see where we walk, where we tend to sit, where we tend to put clutter or set a drink down. Then, you arrange your furniture accordingly.
  • Lighting: Good lighting can change the mood of a room. Think about the function of the space.. Will you need lamps for reading or completing tasks? Does it need to be dark for sleeping

Brainstorm Online

Start by exploring online platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. These sites are full of ideas that can inspire you.

  • Create Pinterest Boards: Whether you are using Pinterest or looking at blogs, it is very easy to pin pictures to inspiration boards.  Often you just need to hover over an image and the Pinterest logo will appear. Tap that and your Pinterest will pull up where you can pin that photo to an existing board or create a new one. I like to make boards for different rooms.  At this point you are just pinning anything you like, so things do not need to be cohesive.
  • Save Instagram Posts/Reels: When you come across inspiring posts or reels, save them to a collection in Instagram. Just like on Pinterest, you can make folders on Instagram for a room.  If you see a color scheme or furniture arrangement you like, simply click the little bookmark image on the bottom right side under the picture.  Then, save that image to an existing folder or make a new one! You can revisit these for ideas on decor, lighting, furniture, color schemes, etc. later.

Brainstorm In Person

Sometimes, seeing things in person can spark creativity! Look around your home and consider:

  • Rooms You Love: What do you like about your favorite room? Is it the colors, furniture, or decor?
  • Friends’ Homes: Visit a friend’s house and take note of what you admire. Ask them where they found their favorite pieces.
  • Retail Spaces or Restaurants: Pay attention to how shops and restaurants decorate. What styles or colors do you find appealing?

Step 2: Pick Your Main Textile

Once you have a plan, it’s time to choose your main textile. This could be a piece of furniture, a comforter for a bedroom, or a statement rug.

  • Start with a Key Piece: If you’re decorating a living room, consider starting with your couch. If it’s a bedroom, choose a comforter. This piece will help you decide on colors and styles for the rest of the room.
  • Choose an Inspiration Piece: Look for a favorite pillow, piece of art, or curtains that you love. This can set the tone for your entire makeover!

Step 3: Pick Your Paint Color

Selecting the right paint color is crucial! Here’s how to do it:

  • Bring Your Textiles: Take your main textile or inspiration piece to a local paint store. This helps you choose colors that complement it.
  • Collect Paint Samples: Grab a variety of paint swatches. Don’t be afraid to take them home to see how they look in your space.
  • Test the Colors: Place your main textile, inspiration piece, and paint swatches together in the room. Observe them throughout the day. The lighting in your space can change how colors look at different times.
  • Sample Paints: If you’re still unsure, buy small samples and paint test spots on your walls. Try different spots in the room to see how the color varies with light.

Step 4: Paint Your Walls

Now that you have your colors picked out, it’s time to paint!

  • Make it Clean and Solid: Painting is easier when the room is empty. If you think it needs a second coat or third, it probably does! A solid color is key for a successful makeover.
  • Allow Paint to Cure: Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next steps.

Step 5: Execute Your Furniture Arrangement

With the walls painted, it’s time to arrange your furniture according to your plan.

  • Stick to Your Plan, But Be Flexible: You may find that once you see everything together, you want to rearrange. That’s okay! Be open to adjustments.

Step 6: Decorate with What You Have

Before buying new decor, see what you already own.

  • Use Existing Pieces: Hang up art or decor items you already have after the paint has cured. This can save money and add personal touches to your room.

Step 7: Make Your Wish List

Finally, it’s time to think about what you still need!

  • Create a Wish List: As you decorate, note any pieces you’d like to find, such as vintage furniture or unique decor. This will help you keep track of what to look for while thrifting or shopping.
  • Include Measurements: If a piece has specific measurements, jot those down. This way, you won’t end up with something that doesn’t fit!
  • Be Patient: Finding the perfect pieces can take time. Don’t rush it! Enjoy the hunt for unique treasures.
